# Patriotic Alternative leader guilty of firearms charges

**The leader of the far right group Patriotic Alternative Scotland appeared in court yesterday after pleading guilty to firearms charges.**

Kenny Smith — a former British National Party member who heads Patriotic Alternative Scotland (PA) — appeared at Portree Sheriff Court, Skye, after pleading guilty in May to charges under the [Firearms Act 1968](https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1968/27/section/1?ref=theferret.scot). He was admonished.

The 50-year-old had been charged with possessing excess ammunition after being issued with a firearms certificate last April, by Chief Constable Sir Iain Livingstone, who heads Police Scotland.

The first charge stated that on 26 August 2021, Smith possessed 320 rounds of 0.22 ammunition at his home in Broadford, Skye, contrary to the Firearms Act 1968\. His certificate only allowed for 300 rounds.

The second charge said that on the same date he possessed 111 rounds of 0.243 ammunition at his home, contrary to the Firearms Act 1968, when he was only allowed to possess 100 rounds.

Smith had pled guilty to the charges at Portree Sheriff Court on 31 May 2022 and sentence was deferred until yesterday.

An official at Portree Sheriff Court told The Ferret that Police Scotland confirmed to the court that Smith had been of good behaviour since his last appearance, and he was admonished by Sheriff Robert Frazer.

An [admonishment](https://www.gov.scot/publications/guidance-self-disclosure-previous-convictions-alternatives-prosecution-scotland-under-rehabilitation-offenders-act-1974/pages/3/?ref=theferret.scot) is a warning to a person convicted of an offence not to commit another crime, but no punishment is given alongside this warning. However, the offence is recorded as a conviction on state records.

Smith has no previous convictions, the court official said.
