Tip-offs from our readers, and insiders in organisations – ranging from government workers to company employees – have been the catalyst for many important public interest stories.
If you want to highlight an issue or expose wrongdoing, but are worried about doing so, there are ways in which you can contact us more securely – and we explain these methods below.
You can be assured that our journalists will always do everything in their ability to protect your identity. We are obliged as professional journalists to protect our sources.
When contacting us, please be as clear and concise as you can, and let us know what evidence you have, and how we might verify it. This may involve sending us physical or digital documents, images, videos, or other materials.
If you are getting in touch about an issue related to the organisation you work for, you should not use your work email, phone or computer. You may also wish to create an anonymous email account to contact us with.
While we cannot pursue every lead, we carefully consider each one, and strongly encourage you to get in touch with tips.
By email
You can contact us via our Protonmail address: theferret.scot@proton.me
It uses end-to-end encryption, which means that any messages exchanged between Protonmail users can only ever be seen by them.
If you don’t already have a Protonmail account, it’s easy and completely free to set one up.
Via Signal
You can write to us, voice chat, and send us files via the Signal messaging app, which also uses end-to-end encryption.
Compared to similar apps, Signal has extra security provisions which protect the service against hackers, collects less information about users that could be used to identify them, and gives you the option to auto-delete messages.
You can find The Ferret on Signal by searching for our phone number, which is 07345 208161.
By post
If you are concerned about contacting us digitally, you can also reach us at our community newsroom by post, which is particularly useful if you want to send physical documents.
Our address is: The Ferret, 82 Bowman St, Govanhill, Glasgow, G42 8LF
