Claim Glasgow City Council put up posters of ‘high risk’ areas for sexual assault is False

Protests and campaigns have sprung up across Glasgow after a series of sexual assaults were reported, with some being linked to migrants in the city. 

Posts on social media claimed that in response to an alleged increase in sexual crimes, Glasgow City Council had put up signs warning people they were in an area of high risk.

Ferret Fact Service looked at this claim and found it False.

Evidence

The posters, which were shared widely across social media platforms including X, Facebook and YouTube, were purported to be from Glasgow City Council and bear the local authority’s logo. 

The graphics warn people they are in an area with a “high risk of sexual assault”. It suggests a series of protection measures, telling people to “stay alert”, “travel in groups” and “avoid isolated areas after dark”. Any "suspicious” activity should be reported to police, it reads.

The Ferret Fact Service could not find any evidence of these posters being put up in Glasgow, and they appear to have just been shared on social media. 

Glasgow City Council told us that the poster was not official, and had not been produced by them. 

A spokesperson said: “We all have to take care to ensure the veracity of the information we share online about Glasgow, especially if that information has come from accounts with no connection to Glasgow.”

It appears the image originated with an anonymous account on social media platform, X. They suggested similar posters should be put up before the upcoming Commonwealth Games.
